Run Away Dog

Dear Friend,

With all the coverage of the run away bride in the news it reminded me of a dog that I worked with a few years back.

The dog was a beautiful Golden Retriever that lived in Little Compton, RI. The dog was confined to the yard by Invisible Fence.

Every morning, the dog would test the fence to see if it was working. You see, Invisible Fence works by giving the dog a warning before giving the correction for going over the boundary.

The collar will usually vibrate or beep ten feet from the actual boundary. This dog would run along the line and see if the batteries were working, and she would do it every day.

If the batteries weren't working, she was long gone. When they called me in to ask for help, my first question was: "Where does she go when she gets loose?" They did not know.

At that point I became curious. Why does this dog try to escape every day? Where is she going? What can we do to stop this behavior?

Anyway, a few days later she escaped again. They found her a few miles down the road. It turns out she had a "boyfriend" down the road that she loved playing with.

Dogs are extremely social animals meaning that they have a strong need to interact and play. If your dog runs away there is a good chance that they need some exercise and social contact.

Letting your dog run and play with other dogs is one of the best activities you can do for your dog. If you have any friends or relatives that have dogs, see if you can set up a time and day when the dogs can play.

If that is not an option you can always bring them to a local doggie daycare. At daycare, dogs play in supervised groups, based on size and activity level.
