7 Ways To Make Dog Training More Enjoyable
Dear Friend,
At the beginning of every class I would always ask this
simple question: "How many of you practiced your training exercises this
week?"
At that point most of the class would look at the ground
and you could see by the expression on everyone's face that they did not do
their homework. Everyone would then tell me how busy they were. "The
kids had to be picked up from school." "I had to work overtime."
"It's getting dark out so early." And on and on...
What it really boils down to is that dog training is
not at the top of the list of fun things to do for most people. I
often joke that dog training is like exercise. We all love the
results, but we all hate the process.
Anyway, I wanted to help you make training your dog more fun, so here
I have listed 7 Ways To Make Dog
Training More Enjoyable. So let's get started:
7 Ways To Make Dog Training More Enjoyable
- Before you even start training make sure
you are in the right frame of mind. The worst thing to do is train
when you feel stressed, angry, depressed, or rushed. When I'm
about to train I turn off the cell phone, take my pup outside, and
devote a good solid 10 minutes towards a training session.
- Make a training goal. Focus on what
command you want your dog to learn. Don't try to teach your dog
sit, down, stand, stay, come, and heel all in one session. If you
want your dog to learn a rock solid down-stay, work on that command.
- Always end on a high note. Sometimes
when a training session is going well we want to keep training.
The best thing for you and your dog is to end it while things are
clicking. You will both look forward to the next training
session.
- Train with a friend. When you make a
commitment with a friend to train you are much more likely to stick to
your training plan. You can also conduct your training session
like a mini-class.
- Read training material before you start to
train. When you read some dog training stuff, your session will
always be much better. Don't ask me why or how it works, but it
does.
Let me give you an example: I've been playing poker for
years. Just recently, my brother and a couple of my buddies have
started a weekly poker game. Every week before I leave the house
to go and play, I spend about 15 minutes re-reading one of the best
books ever written about the game. Every time I do this I play
better.
There is some good training material on this website, or you can order
and read
The Amazing Dog Training Man.
- Take a class or attend a seminar. I
strongly believe that learning never stops. Every year I attend
classes and seminars on dog training, dog nutrition, grooming, and
behavior. I also take classes on business, marketing, and
management. This helps me stay at the top of my game.
- Teach your dog a trick. For some
reason when we teach our dogs a trick we have more fun than teaching an
obedience command. You can see the difference in the dog and the
owner. Have some fun with it.
All the best,
